The Miami sandbar almanac.
An operator's reference to Miami's two go-to sandbars: where Haulover and Nixon actually sit on Biscayne Bay, how they differ, and how to read the day. Original diagrams, real geography.
Where the sandbars actually sit.
North is up. Haulover sits inside Haulover Cut in North Miami; Nixon sits off the western side of Key Biscayne, near Hurricane Harbor and about two miles north of the Cape Florida Lighthouse. Departure points and on-the-day route details are confirmed directly for your date.
Haulover or Nixon, side by side.
Both work. The choice is really about whether the group wants the social North Miami read or the calmer Key Biscayne line.
| Haulover | Nixon | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | North Miami, just inside Haulover Cut between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles. | West side of Key Biscayne near Hurricane Harbor, about two miles north of Cape Florida Lighthouse. |
| Character | Social and busier, especially on weekends. | Calmer and more scenic, a Key Biscayne read. |
| Water | About two to four feet at mid to high tide. | About two to five feet. |
| Best for | The party-water middle of the day. | A slower celebration day with more scenery. |
How to read the day.
A sandbar day is a read, not a fixed schedule. Four things shape it. Tide sets how much shallow water there is to stand in - the sandbars are shallowest as the tide drops. Timing decides the crowd: weekends and holidays bring the busy social scene to Haulover, while a weekday or an earlier start keeps either sandbar quieter. Weather and wind decide comfort and which side of the bay reads calmer on the day. And group mood is the real tiebreaker: a loud celebration points to Haulover, a slower scenic day points to Nixon.
None of that is a fixed rule. The captain reads the actual conditions on the date, and the departure point, timing, and on-the-water details are confirmed directly for your charter. For the decision in one page, see the Haulover vs. Nixon comparison.
